After leaving a career in teaching, Bruce began a personal collection of books that eventually became the store. Bruce's eclectic interests have been fueled by extensive global travel, a love of fine art and literature, and an obsession with film. These interests are reflected in the store's extensive stock, and although it is a general store, it has focal points in literature, art, architecture, design, photography, and military/general history. After over 30 years in business, Bruce is still actively involved in the daily acquisition of stock for the store.

Every so often Bruce enjoys challenging himself with some particularly academic material. Here are a couple of titles that he recommends:

The Ideas and Careers of Simon-Nicolas-Henri Linguet: A Study in Eighteenth-Century French Politics
Darline Gay Levy
A study of the notorious eighteenth-century French political and social theorist, lawyer, and journalist whose ideas find echoes in modern socialist, capitalist, and state-capitalist thought.

Undertaker of the Mind: John Monro and Mad-Doctoring in Eighteenth-Century England
Jonathan Andrews and Andrew Scull
An examination of Dr. John Monro, a serious physician neither reactionary nor enlightened in his methods, who was the outright epitome of the mad-trade as it existed in the 18th century, esteemed in some quarters and ridiculed in others.
